A painter had been trying to get Walker Evans to teach him photography, to no avail. Finally, as Evans was getting in a car to head off for another WPA project, the guy begged him, “Please Walker, just give me something!”. Evans said, “f/11. Hold it steady.” This story comes from a PBS documentary about the WPA photographers.
